EVANSTON, Ill. - Rain forced the cancellation of the second game of the Purdue softball team's doubleheader with Northwestern. The Boilermakers led 1-0 in the top of the third when the lightning/rain delay began.
Northwestern stranded two in the top of the first, then Purdue equaled the effort in the bottom of the inning. The Boilermakers put two in scoring position after a pair of walks and a wild pitch, but could not convert.
The Boilermakers scored their first run against the Wildcats in 32 innings with a squeeze bunt in the second inning. Senior Lauren Devich (Bloomington, Ind.) laid down the bunt with runners at second and third, allowing pinch runner Kelly Miller (Indianapolis, Ind.) to slide past the tag at home. Freshman Katie Mitchell (Crown Point, Ind.) went to third on the play. Senior Staci Falzon (Carlsbad, Calif.) joined the two on base to load the bases with one out. A strike out and fly out kept Purdue from adding any more runs.
Lightning was spotted as the first batter took the plate in the third. Heavy rain followed prompting the cancellation of the contest. The game will not be made up.
The Boilermakers return to action at 3 p.m. Friday, when the Iowa Hawkeyes come to West Lafayette.
