WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team improved to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten with a 6-1 victory over Ohio State in West Lafayette on Saturday. The Boilermakers have won four of the last five meetings with the Buckeyes, and drew one match closer to evening the all-time series with the Buckeyes at 20-19.
Purdue, ranked 39th, took a 1-0 lead in the match by claiming the doubles point. Finishing first was the No. 2 pair of sophomore Stephanie Wooten and freshman Randi Schuler, which defeated Julie Blackmore and Ciara Finucane 8-3. Ohio State answered with a win at No. 3, but sophomore Brooke Beier teamed with freshman Mallory Voelker to deliver an 8-6 win at No. 1 to clinch the point.
The Boilermakers steamrolled through singles. First off the court was Wooten, who dismantled Angela DiPastina by a 6-2, 6-0 score at No. 4. Schuler, ranked 60th, was the next to finish, with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Caitlin O'Keefe at No. 1. At No. 5, freshman Anna Dzeva came through with the deciding win, a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Ciara Finucane. Adding victories were Voelker at No. 3, and Beier at No. 2.
Head coach Mat Iandolo was pleased with how his team performed.
"I am really proud of how well we played and how hard we fought for this win," Iandolo said. "Even though we're ranked higher than Ohio State, we knew it would take a great effort to beat them. Everyone played their hearts out."
Iandolo would like to see more of the same Sunday, when the Boilermakers play host to No. 2 Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are 17-1 overall this season.
Purdue played Ohio State (9-7, 1-2 Big Ten) outdoors at the Varsity Tennis Courts. The match with the Fighting Irish, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., will be played either at the Varsity Tennis Courts or indoors at the Lafayette Sports Center, depending on weather conditions.
