AUSTIN, Texas - The Purdue women's golf team is in fifth place after the first round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas.

The eighth-ranked Boilermakers fired a first-round 306. Texas A&M leads the event after a total of 298. Duke is in second place (302), TCU is third (303) and SMU (305) is in fourth place.

Freshman Maria Hernandez was the low Boilermaker on Friday. She fired a two-over 74 and is tied for fourth overall. Hernandez was two over par on the front nine and played the back nine at even par.

Freshman Christel Boeljon and sophomore Whitney Frykman both carded 76s in the first round. The duo is tied for 16th overall.

Senior Onnarin Sattayabanphot is tied for 44th after an 80 on Friday. Sattayabanphot was six-over par on the front nine.

Junior Myrte Eikenaar fired an 81 and is tied for 59th.

This is the third appearance for the Boilermakers in the event. They placed fourth in 2001. The Betsy Rawls Invitational features 15 teams, including top-ranked Duke.

The Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational is being played at the par 72, 6,353-yard University of Texas Golf Club. The second will be held on Saturday and the final round on Sunday.

The Boilermakers have placed second in both of their spring events. They captured a school-record four tournaments in the fall season.
