GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Through two tournaments in the young spring season, the Purdue women's golf team's number has been had by the Florida Gators. The Gators captured the title of the 2006 SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational on Sunday in Gainesville.
For the second-straight tournament, No. 18 Florida finished ahead of the Boilermakers. The Gators totaled 884 over the three rounds, 14 strokes ahead of No. 4 Purdue. The Boilermakers fired a final-round 305 and totaled 898 over the two days.
Florida's Sandra Gal captured the individual title on her home course with a total of seven over par.
Freshman Christel Boeljon and junior Myrte Eikenaar were the top-placing Boilermakers. Boeljon fired a final-round 76 and Eikenaar carded a 77. The duo totaled 224 and tied for 11th overall.
Senior Onnarin Sattayabanphot posted a team-low 74 on Sunday. She tied for 13th overall after a total of 225. Freshman Maria Hernandez tied for 19th after a total of 228. She fired an 81 in the final round.
Sophomore Whitney Frykman tied for 38th overall. She posted a final-round 78 and totaled 235.
The fourth-ranked Boilermakers captured four tournament titles during the fall season. They placed second at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, the first event of the spring season.
The 2006 Lady Gator was held on the 5,927-yard, par-70 University Golf Course.
Purdue was the top-ranked squad in the 14-team field. The Boilermakers placed fifth in the 2005 Lady Gator Invitational.
