WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue women's tennis players Randi Schuler and Hala Sufi went down swinging at the Riviera/ITA-Women's All-American Championships in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Despite not reaching the main draw, both players turned in impressive performances before bowing out of the qualifying round.
Schuler, a freshman, upset 39th-ranked and ninth-seeded Caroline Raba of Pepperdine 6-4, 6-1 in the first round. In the second, she fell 6-2, 7-6 (5) to 122nd-ranked Zuzana Cerna of Baylor.
Sufi, ranked 73rd, lost 6-3, 6-1 to 47th-ranked and 16th-seeded Cristina Visico of California in the first round. In the consolation draw, the junior All-Big Ten player rebounded to defeat Tennessee's 57th-ranked Blakeley Griffith 6-1, 6-2.
While Schuler's run is complete, Sufi will continue competing in the consolation draw. She is scheduled to face 56th-ranked Nina Suvak of Florida on Wednesday.
