WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue women's tennis players Hala Sufi and Randi Schuler advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2005 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships in East Lansing, Mich. Their runs ended Sunday, just shy of the quarterfinals.
Sufi won two matches as the tournament's No. 8 seed. The 73rd-ranked junior beat Sarah Golon of Cleveland State 6-1, 6-1, and Cecile Perton of Indiana 6-1, 6-3. In the third round, however, she lost 6-2, 7-5 to Gergana Ganeva of DePaul.
Schuler, a freshman, beat Keley Teft of Notre Dame by a 6-2, 6-3 score in round 1. She followed that with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 upset of 16th-seeded and 110th-ranked Elizabeth Exon of Michigan. Facing top-seeded and 11th-ranked Cristelle Grier of Northwestern in the third round, Schuler ran out of gas; she lost 6-4, 6-3.
Also competing in the main draw of singles were sophomore Brooke Beier and freshman Mallory Voelker. Both lost in the first round.
Voelker gained entry into the main draw by beating Haly Calderwood of Ball State, Lindsey Howard of Michigan, and Jenna Nussbaum of Bowling Green in the qualifying draw. All three victories came in straight sets.
Freshman Anna Dzeva won two qualifying draw matches against Emma Retter of Ball State and Kayla Berry of Iowa. She fell one win short of the main draw, losing in the third round to Stephanie Kebler of host Michigan State.
Senior Brittany Minna lost in the first round of qualifying to Ashley Morris of Bradley.
In doubles, the pairs of Sufi and Beier and Schuler and Voelker won one match apiece. Minna and Dzeva lost in the first round.
The Boilermakers will finish their fall season at the Western Michigan Invitational from Nov. 4 to 6.
