TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - A quick start towards the front of the pack couldn't keep Purdue among the top teams as the Boilermakers faded to a 28th-place finish in the 35-team blue race at the 2005 Pre-Nationals on Saturday. The race was run at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, home of the 2005 NCAA Championships.

After a good week of practice, the Boilermakers had high expectations for the race but were unable to keep pace with the competitive field, won by Stanford with a team score of 86. The Purdue squad finished the 6K event with a team total of 719.

Lindsay Zinn was the lead Boilermaker across the finish line, completing the course with a time of 21:45.6 and a 81st-place showing. That time was 1:44 off the championship pace of 20:01.5 run by Butler's Victoria Mitchell.

Corrie Whisner followed Zinn across the line with the second finish for the Boilermakers. Whisner placed 97th with a time of 21:56.1.

In a perfect example of the day's race for Purdue, Carrie Fett came out of the gates fast and ran out of her right show during the first of two laps, running approximately 4K of the 6K race with only one shoe. Despite the blowout, Fett finished 138th with a time of 22:26.4.

Rounding out the five scoring runners for the Boilermakers were Elle Lammers, whose 23:15.8 was good for 195th, and Kaleena Cappell, who finished 208th with a 23:37.6.

Not scoring for Purdue were Laura Farley, who ran a 24:00.4 to finish 22nd, and Anne King, who circled the course in 229th with a 24:26.5.

Purdue hits the competitive course in two weeks, running in the 2005 Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis on Oct. 30.
