With the addition of three talented freshmen and a solid nucleus of returning athletes, the Purdue women's golf team was eager to begin the 2005 fall season. After setting a school record en route to a 17-stroke win at the Badger Invitational on Monday, it is easy to see what the buzz was about.
The Boilermakers totaled a school-record 879, while senior Onnarin Sattayabanphot won her first collegiate tournament by firing a one-under 215.
"Anytime you win, it helps your confidence," said head coach Devon Brouse. "We are very happy to begin the year with this win. Now, we hope the confidence can spill over to the rest of the year."
Purdue's totals of 289 in the second round and 297 in the final round were both the lowest of the round of any team in the field. Texas A&M placed second with a total of 896, and Missouri placed third with a total of 898.
Sattayabanphot fired a 71 and 69 in the first and second rounds played on Sunday. Her second 18-hole score is the ninth lowest in Purdue history. Her total of 215 is the third lowest in the history of the program. She fired a final-round 75 and captured individual honors by one stroke.
Freshman Maria Hernandez fired a 217 over the three rounds and finished third overall in her first collegiate event. She fired a final-round 71, the lowest of the day. Hernandez's total of 217 is the sixth-lowest in school history in a 54-hole event.
Junior Myrte Eikenaar tied for seventh place after totaling 224 strokes. She fired a final-round 76. Whitney Frykman, 2005 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, tied for 14th overall. She totaled 227 strokes.
Freshman Christel Boeljon tied for 27th after a total of 230. Junior Caroline Haase competed as an individual and tied for 49th overall. She totaled 239.
It is the first tournament win for the Boilermakers since they captured the Mercedes-Benz Invitational in 2002.
The Boilermakers will compete in the Lady Northern Invitational on Sept. 24 and 25 in Bloomington, Ind.
