WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team recorded its second consecutive Big Ten victory in convincing fashion, as it defeated No. 68 Ohio State 6-1 in Columbus on Sunday. The 61st-ranked Boilermakers have won three straight matches to improve to 5-9 overall (2-2 Big Ten). The loss dropped the Buckeyes to 6-12 (1-3 Big Ten).
Purdue ran out to a 1-0 start behind doubles wins by seniors Lara Burgarello and Shawna Zuccarini at No. 1, and sophomores Alyssa Rodriguez and Hala Sufi at No. 3.
In singles, freshman Stephanie Wooten posted a quick 6-3, 6-0 win over Emily DeCamilla at No. 2, and was followed off the court by Zuccarini, who beat Sonia Ruzimovsky 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3.
Ohio State finally got on the board with a win at No. 4, but 74th-ranked Sufi clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Lindsey Adams in the top slot.
Rodriguez and senior Amy Walgenbach added three-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6.
Purdue head coach Mat Iandolo complimented his team's effort, which resulted in the Boilermakers' first win in Columbus since April 18, 1998.
"I am very proud of how hard we competed," Iandolo said. "This performance is something we can hopefully build on as we continue our Big Ten season and fight for seeding in the tournament."
Before the Boilermakers resume their league schedule, they will play their last non-conference match against LSU on April 6, in West Lafayette.
