Final Stats

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Northwestern handed the Purdue men's tennis team a 6-1 defeat Sunday at the Varsity Tennis Courts, spoiling Senior Day for the Boilermakers. The 57th-ranked Wildcats improved to 10-11 overall and 5-4 in the Big Ten with the victory, while Purdue dropped to 3-14 and 0-8.

Northwestern took the first point of the match, winning two of the three doubles contests. The Boilermakers did not surrender the point easily. After splitting on courts 1 and 2, Purdue had a chance to win the plurality of matches with a victory at No. 3, but Willy Lock and Justin Hoeveler prevailed in a tiebreaker over junior Colin Foster and sophomore Scott Warner.

In singles, Northwestern won the first two matches off the court at No. 1 and No. 4, before Purdue sophomore Matt Zollman came through with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Hoeveler at No. 6.

The Boilermakers needed to win the remainder of the matches on the court to claim the team victory. Unfortunately, the Wildcats outlasted the last three Purdue players, winning at Nos. 3, 5 and 2 in three sets.

Purdue played without junior Paul Rose, who was named team Most Valuable Player at its season-ending banquet Saturday night. Rose continues to battle a knee injury sustained March 4, in a match against Illinois.

Purdue has one weekend of competition left in its regular season. The Boilermakers will play at Iowa and at Minnesota on April 23 and 24. They will compete at the Big Ten Championships in Champaign, Ill., beginning April 28.
