WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A dramatic contest between No. 50 Purdue and No. 33 Wisconsin ended with the Badgers pulling out a 4-3 victory Sunday in Madison.
The Boilermakers watched Wisconsin rip a potential upset from their hands, as 83rd-ranked Caitlin Burke defeated Purdue freshman Stephanie Wooten 6-4, 7-6 in the contest that clinched the match.
Wisconsin improved to 13-7 overall and 5-4 in the Big Ten with the victory, while Purdue dropped to 7-12 and 4-4 with the loss.
Wisconsin scored first, winning the doubles point behind victories at No. 1 and No. 3. After the point already was decided, the Purdue duo of sophomore Hala Sufi and freshman Brooke Beier posted a 9-7 win over Lindsay Martin and Kaylan Caiati at No. 2.
Purdue quickly turned the momentum in its favor in singles. Senior Lara Burgarello made quick work of Lexi Goldin, winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6. Sufi, ranked 99th, followed with a mild upset of 91st-ranked Katie McGaffigan at No. 1, beating the Badger 6-3, 6-1.
Wisconsin answered with two straight wins at No. 3 and No. 4 to go ahead 3-2. Boilermaker senior Amy Walgenbach ended the streak with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Chelsea Nusslock at No. 5, setting up the finish at No. 2.
Purdue, which had won five of its previous six matches before facing No. 3 Northwestern and Wisconsin over the weekend, will look to get back on track next Saturday, when it entertains Minnesota at 1 p.m. The Boilermakers will finish their regular season against Iowa on Sunday, at 11 a.m. The matches will be the last two at home in the careers of Walgenbach, Lara Burgarello and Shawna Zuccarini.
