WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team saw its two-match win streak come to an end with a 6-1 loss at No. 3. Northwestern on Saturday. The 50th-ranked Boilermakers fell to 7-11 overall and 4-3 in the Big Ten, while the Wildcats improved to 18-2 and 8-0.
Northwestern, which has not lost a Big Ten match since April 4, 2004, took a 1-0 lead by capturing the doubles point. Not once this spring have the Wildcats lost a single doubles match in conference play.
Northwestern won the first four singles matches before Purdue senior Amy Walgenbach put the Boilermakers on the scoreboard with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Alexis Conill at No. 6.
Purdue sophomore Hala Sufi, ranked 99th nationally in singles, nearly won her first set against third-ranked Audra Cohen. But Cohen prevailed in a tiebreaker, and won the second set 6-3 to take the match.
The Boilermakers, who entered the match with the Wildcats having won five of their previous six contests and four straight in league action, will have a chance to get back on course Sunday, when they meet No. 33 Wisconsin in Madison, at 11 a.m.
