WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 61st-ranked Purdue women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 29 Notre Dame in South Bend on Tuesday. The Boilermakers have lost six straight, all to teams ranked in the nation's top 50, and now own a 2-8 overall record. The Irish improved to 7-7 with the win.
Notre Dame won the doubles point, sweeping all three matches. Senior partners Lara Burgarello and Shawna Zuccarini fell to Kristina Stastny and Catrina Thompson 8-6 at the No. 1 position, while Brooke Buck and Lauren Connelly defeated Purdue's tandem Brooke Beier and Stephanie Wooten 8-5 at No. 2. At No. 3 Alyssa Rodriguez and Hala Sufi were defeated by Sarah Jane Connelly and Jennifer Smith 8-2.
The Boilermakers entered the singles portion of the match needing to win four of the six contests. Purdue pulled off two wins from freshman Brooke Beier at No. 5 and senior Amy Walgenbach at No. 6. Beier defeated Jennifer Smith 6-3, 6-0, while Walgenbach beat Liz Donahue 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Walgenbach now has won four straight matches.
Purdue will face Indiana on March 26 and Penn State on March 27. Both matches will be at the Lafayette Sports Center.
