WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 53rd-ranked Purdue women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 18 California in Berkeley on Wednesday. The Boilermakers have lost five straight, all to teams ranked in the nation's top 50, and now own a 2-7 overall record. The Golden Bears improved to 8-3 with the win.
Purdue won the doubles point, claiming victories at No. 1 and No. 2. The 54th-ranked senior duo of Lara Burgarello and Shawna Zuccarini beat Suzi Babos and Marion Ravelojaona 8-4 at the top spot. In the second position, the freshman pair of Brooke Beier and Stephanie Wooten downed Stephanie Kusano and Jessica Shu 8-3.
The Boilermakers entered the singles portion of the match needing to win three of the six contests. They got just one, from senior Amy Walgenbach. Playing near her hometown of Carmel, Calif., Walgenbach picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Brooke Borisoff at No. 6. Walgenbach has won three straight matches.
Purdue will be off for nearly a week before it travels to Notre Dame for a March 22 match.
