WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision at No. 62 Western Michigan on Tuesday. The 46th-ranked Boilermakers watched their 2005 record fall to 1-2 with their first road loss of the season. Meanwhile, the Broncos improved to 5-1 with the mild upset.

The host Broncos, who had lost four straight to the Boilermakers, got off to a good start by sweeping all three doubles matches to claim the first point of the day.

Western Michigan won the first singles match to come off the court, as Purdue senior Lara Burgarello was forced to retire in the second set. Senior Shawna Zuccarini then got the Boilermakers on board with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Malena Remynse at No. 3.

But the Broncos won the next two matches at No. 5 and No. 4, clinching the victory. Freshman Stephanie Wooten (No. 2) and 71st-ranked sophomore Hala Sufi (No. 1) added singles wins after the team outcome already was decided.

Purdue will have little time to dwell on the loss. The Boilermakers welcome No. 19 Texas A&M and No. 30 Wake Forest to the Lafayette Sports Center this weekend. Purdue will face the Aggies on Friday at 1 p.m., and will take on the Demon Deacons on Sunday at 10 a.m.
