LEXINGTON, Ky. - Several Purdue field athletes posted solid performances during the first day of competition at the University of Kentucky's Rod McCravy Memorial.
The Boilermakers lone victory was earned by weight throwing sophomore Astin Steward, who recorded a distance of 17.87 meters (58-7 1/2). Steward just edged Kentucky senior Gennessa Guzman for first place, as the Wildcat finished with a mark of 17.81 (58-5 1/4).
Steward's teammates Courtney Magnuson (17.69; 58-00 1/4) and Sheena James (15.54; 51-00) placed third and sixth in the 13-woman field, which also included competitors from Florida State and Miami (Ohio).
J.P. Smolenski also fared well in the weight throw, placing second with an effort of 18.13 (59-5 3/4). Jake Dunkleberger of Miami won the competition with his NCAA provisional launch of 19.14 (62-9 1/2).
Elsewhere in the field, John Porter was second in the pole vault at 4.60 (15-1), Derek Watkins was fourth in the high jump (2.05; 6-8 3/4) and Leah Kinkaid also was fourth in the triple jump with a season best of 10.90 (35-9 1/4).
