WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Scott Warner won three matches on the first day of the Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday. The sophomore on the Purdue men's tennis team won two singles contests, and paired up with classmate Jarred Leibner for a doubles win at the Varsity Tennis Courts in West Lafayette.

Warner's first win of the day came against Travis Curran of Toledo, by a 6-2, 6-1 score. Warner next defeated Ryan McCarthy of Indiana 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the championship match of the Black Flight. Warner will meet Hoosier David Bubenicek for the Black Flight title Sunday.

Warner and Leibner finished the afternoon with an 8-3 win against Chris Clark and Tony Tran of Toledo in the doubles Black Flight. Also winning in doubles was the Boilermaker senior tandem of Sounak Chatterjee and Filip Koziell, which beat Rob Simpson and Justin Yeager of Xavier 8-6 in the Gold Flight.

Warner was focused heading into the tournament.

"I came in with a very specific mindset to stay within myself during all my matches," Warner said. "I just tried to outwork my opponents."

Like Warner, Purdue sophomore Matt Zollman advanced to a championship match. Zollman outlasted Adam Shaffer of Xavier 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the first round, then beat Freddy Gomez of Toledo 6-2, 7-5 in the second. Zollman will play Dara McLoughlin of Indiana for the White Flight title Sunday.

Chris Cozad became Purdue's third title contender. The sophomore beat Rustin Reys of Xavier 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round, then knocked off Brian Rager of Toledo 6-1, 6-4 in the second round. Cozad will play Tran for the Gray Flight title Sunday.

Other singles winners for Purdue were Chatterjee, Koziell, junior Colin Foster, sophomore Eric Hodgman, and sophomore Chris Cozad. Chatterjee beat Jeremy Miller of Xavier 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 in the Gold Flight, filling in for sophomore Jarred Leibner, who suffered a first-round three-set loss to Dmytro Ishtuganov (1-6, 6-1, 6-0). Foster split, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 over Butler's Andy Bartish in round one before suffering a 6-3, 6-0 defeat to Bubenicek in the second round of the Black Flight.

Koziell split in the Silver Flight, as did Hodgman. Koziell beat Scott Newmark of Butler 7-6, 6-4, but lost 6-3, 6-1 to Clark. Hodgman won 6-1, 6-4 over Brian Schubert of Xavier before falling 6-3, 6-0 to Indiana's Mike McCarthy.

Purdue head coach Tim Madden was pleased with the results, but still sees room for improvement.

"Today we were up and down for the most part, but we found ways to win," Madden said. "We have a lot of things we can get better at. This tournament is a good way for us to find out what those things are."

Madden pointed out the play of Warner and Cozad.

"Scott and Chris stood out," Madden said. "They both are very hungry to prove themselves this year. The way they came through speaks volumes about their ability and confidence level."

The Boilermaker Invitational will conclude Sunday with one round of singles and two rounds of doubles at the Varsity Tennis Courts. Play will begin at 9 a.m.
