IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Purdue cross country teams did not perform at the level expected by head coach Jack Warner at the 2004 Big Ten Championships in Iowa City, Iowa, finishing a disappointing ninth in the women's race and in 10th in the men's event. The race was run at the UI Cross Country Course.
Wisconsin was victorious in the men's 8,000 meter race, while Michigan claimed the title in the women's 6,000 meter competition.
For the women, senior Amber Ferner was the top Boilermaker, running the course in 21:57 for a 22nd-place finish, 1:24 off the pace set by Big Ten champion Danette Doetzel of Michigan State. Senior Kara Lahey finished 27th with a time of 22:12, and junior Lindsay Zinn crossed the line nine seconds later with a 33rd-place 22:21.
The final two scoring runners for Purdue were junior Corrie Whisner and junior Laura Farley. Whisner finished 53rd overall, 53nd among scoring participants, with a time posting of 22:49. Farley rana 22:58 for 58th, 56th among scorers.
Other runners for the Boilermakers were senior Christan Bahler, who finished 80th with a clocking of 23:49, and sophomore Anne King, whose time of 24:44 was good for 90th.
In the men's race, freshman Justin Stadt was the top Boilermaker with a time of 25:56 for 61st overall and 55th among scoring runners. The men's individual championship time of 23:45 was run by Simon Bairu of Wisconin, his second consecutive Big Ten title.
Freshman Zach Wilder and senior Nick Bruckbauer were next through the tape for Purdue. Wilder ran a 71st-place 26:23, 61st in scoring, and Bruckbauer finished in 77th, 64th among scorers, with a time of 27:08. The final two scorers for the Boilermakers were freshman Eric Hammond with a 78th-place 27:11 (65th) and freshman Justin Gauthier with a 81st-place 27:45 (67th).
Other Purdue runners were sophomore Bill Potempa, who ran an 82nd-place 27:51, and sophomore Joshua Robinson, wo finished 83rd with a race of 28:24.
