WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team enjoyed a successful day at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Minneapolis on Friday. Freshman Brooke Beier won to advance to the singles main draw, while the doubles team of sophomore Hala Sufi and freshman Stephanie Wooten recorded two victories to move into the round of 16.
Beier won her third straight match of the tournament, beating Marina Bugaenco of host Minnesota 6-1, 6-2. Beier will face Michelle DaCosta of Michigan on Saturday.
In doubles, Sufi and Wooten started the day with an 8-2 win over the Notre Dame pair of Liz Donohue and Jen Smith. They followed that victory with an 8-6 decision against the Ohio State tandem of DeCamilla and Howard. Sufi and Wooten will play Cristelle Grier and Audra Cohen of Northwestern in the third round Saturday.
Beier and senior Shawna Zuccarini lost their first-round main draw doubles match, falling 8-4 to Sarah Jane Connelly and Kristina Stastny of Notre Dame. They rebounded in a consolation match, however, defeating Jessica Baron and Marta Walasek of Michigan State, 8-3.
In addition to the aforementioned Saturday action, Sufi, Zuccarini, Wooten and senior Amy Walgenbach will begin play in the singles main draw Saturday at the Baseline Tennis Center.
