The Purdue cross country teams got a look at what the NCAA has to offer, competing at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday. In a field of the elite teams from across the nation, the Boilermaker women finished 17th out of 36 squads while the men placed 36th of 37.
The event, held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course, featured over 70 schools from around the nation for both the women and the men. Each division was divided into two races.
In the 6K women's event, Lindsay Zinn was the top Boilermaker with a 47th-place 21:30.6, followed by Kara Lahey's 21:53.5 (76th) and Amber Ferner's 21:59.0 (82nd). Other Purdue scoring runners were Rachel Kroll (135th, 22:30.6) and Kaleena Cappel (146th, 22:37.0).
The Boilermakers scored 486 points as a team and finished fourth of five Big Ten schools in the field. Colorado was the team champion with 94 points. From the Big Ten, Michigan placed second with 109 and Michigan State was fifth with 218. Other conference competitors were Illinois (11th, 361) and Ohio State (32nd, 798).
Renee Metevier of Colorado was the individual champion, circling the 6K course in 20:03.6.
On the men's side, Justin Stadt and Zach Wilder were the top two runners for the Old Gold and Black in the 8K race. Stadt placed 168th with a time of 25:53.9, and Wilder finished one place behind his teammate in 25:54.2.
Justin Gauthier finihsed 201st for the Boilermakers with a race of 26:30.0, and was followed across the line by Eric Hammond (208th, 26:30.0) and Nick Bruckbauer (232nd, 27:09.3).
Like the women, Colorado's men were the top team with 63 points. Purdue scored 978 team points. Other Big Ten schools in the field were Indiana (6th, 235) and Michigan State (12th, 375).
Matt Gonzalez of New Mexico was the top individual finisher in the races, running a 23:47.2.
Next for the Purdue harriers is the 2004 Big Ten Championships in Iowa City, Iowa. The conference event will be run on Saturday, Oct. 31.
