COLUMBUS, Ohio - Purdue (6-3, 2-1 Big Ten) is still in search for its first road win of the year, dropping a 1-0 decision to Ohio State (5-2-1, 1-0-1 Big Ten) Friday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The match was attended by 1,369 fans, many of whom came to cheer Purdue's Ohio players: Shauna Stapleton (Springfield), Jordyn Shaffer (Dayton), Kim Comisar and Parrissa Eyorokon (West Chester). All four Ohioans started the match, with West Chester natives Comisar and Eyorokon patrolling the forward positions.
Unfortunately, it was the Buckeye fans who went home happy.
Ohio State scored first on a penalty kick goal by Heather Miller in the 35th minute, which proved to be the game-winner. It was Miller's fourth goal of the year.
The Buckeyes were awarded the penalty kick after Lisa Grubb became entangled with a Boilermaker defender just inside the goal box. Ohio State nearly scored again minutes later, but Lara's Dickenmann's blast from 18-yards out rattled the crossbar and bounced out of the goal box after hitting the ground.
The Boilermakers' defensive line played a solid first half, with Kristin Lichtenberg making four key stops inside the penalty box. Christy Riggle picked Grubb on a fast break and Hetzel intercepted Dickenmann just outside the six-yard box.
The defense also helped clear three first half corner kicks.
Mason finished the first half with two saves, and came out of the goal box twice to stuff attempts by Grubb and Hoban.
The Buckeyes continued to attack the Purdue net into the second half, outshooting the Boilermakers, 12 to 3, and 23 to 6 for the match. However, the Purdue defense hung tough, as Kira Bilecky and Zarinah Blockton cleared several crosses.
Sometimes the Boilermakers played a little too tough, receiving two second-half yellow cards. Purdue entered the match with only one yellow card through eight contests.
Mason also responded well to the Buckeye attack. Midway through the second period, Mason made back-to-back saves on point-blank blasts by Grubb and Dickenmann.
Purdue had few chances to tie the match during the final 45 minutes. OSU's goalkeeper Emily Haynam leaped above three Purdue attackers to intercept an Eyorokon corner kick in the 65th minute, and later knocked down a Comisar attempt inside the 10-yard mark.
Haynam finished the contest with two saves, while Mason collected six.
The Boilermakers conclude their road trip Sunday with a 1 p.m. match at Penn State. Purdue topped the Nittany Lions, 3-1, last season in West Lafayette.
