WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue freshmen tennis players Stephanie Wooten and Brooke Beier will square off against one another in the Flight Five final at the Tennessee St. Mary's Fall Tennis Classic on Sunday, after both advanced to the title match with semifinal wins Saturday.
Wooten, a native of Combine, Texas, beat Meredith Vincent 6-1, 6-1 in the upper half of the bracket. Beier, who hails from East China, Mich., swept Julia Roach of N.C. State 6-3, 6-2 in the lower half. The two rookies will meet at 8 a.m. Sunday, the final day of the tournament.
Either Wooten or Beier will bring a title back to West Lafayette. No other Boilermaker will be playing for a crown, but Shawna Zuccarini will play for third place in Flight Four. The senior won her first match Friday before suffering a 6-4, 6-0 loss to Jenna Loeb of Wake Forest Saturday afternoon. She will face Marti Morris of Furman in the third-place match.
In Flight One, sophomore Hala Sufi won Saturday to advance to the 5th-6th place match. Sufi downed Mary Neill Hagood of Furman 6-2, 6-3. She will play Barbara Orlay of N.C. State at 10 a.m.
Also advancing to a 5th-6th place match was senior Amy Walgenbach, who outlasted Caroline Bentley of Furman 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Walgenbach will play Virginia Romero of N.C. State in her last match in Flight Three.
Junior Brittany Minna received a default victory over Alisha Talbot of Wake Forest, and will play Carmen Torres of N.C. State for fifth place in Flight Six.
Sophomore Alyssa Rodriguez lost 7-6, 6-4 to Ana Marie Cibils of Middle Tennessee State in Flight Two. She is scheduled to meet Lindsay Adams of Ohio State for seventh place.
In doubles Saturday, Rodriguez and senior Lara Burgarello took third place in Flight One with an 8-6 win over Jennifer Klaschka and Sabrina Rohrmoser of Middle Tennessee State. Zuccarini and Beier settled for second in Flight Two after dropping an 8-6 decision to Melissa Schaub and Bryce Marable of Tennessee in the title match. Sufi and Wooten came in third in Flight Two, beating Loeb and Katie Martzolf of Wake Forest 8-3. Walgenbach and Minna finished sixth in Flight Three. They fell 8-4 to Shannon Moore and Lisa Bornt-Davis of Furman.
