AUSTIN, Texas - Shaun Guice and Amber Ferner earned All-America honors at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Saturday evening. Guice finished sixth in the men's high jump while Ferner was seventh in the women's 3000 steeplechase.
Also competing in finals action on Saturday was Keith McBride, who placed 12th in the men's hammer throw.
Men's Hammer
Keith McBride (Sr., Valparaiso, Ind.) was unable to duplicate his preliminary performance in the men's hammer, fouling on his first two efforts before a final throw of 61.90m (203-01) placed him 12th in the finals standings. Thomas Freeman of Manhattan, who came to the championships as the nation's top hammer thrower, won the gold medal on his fifth and final throw with a throw of 70.77m (232-02), topping Virginia Tech's Spyridon Jullien by just three inches. McBride had produced the meet's second-best effort in the preliminaries to earna spot in the finals.
Women's 3000 Steeplechase
Amber Ferner (Jr., West Lafayette, Ind.) brings home her first All-America honor with a seventh-place finish in the women's 3000 steeplechase at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships with a time of 10:15.26, 27 seconds off the championship pace set by Ida Nilsson of Northern Arizona.
Purdue's local product barely missed her career-best time, and the Boilermaker program-record time, of 10:12.26 which she set at the 2004 Big Ten Championships. Ferner is the first Purdue athlete to earn All-America honors in the steeplechase in program history on both the men's and women's side. Overall, Ferner earns the 48th All-America honor of Purdue's women's outdoor track & field history, a program that started in 1976.
Men's High Jump
For the third time in his outdoor career, Shaun Guice (Sr., Lima, Ohio) earned All-America accolades with a sixth-place showing at the 2004 outdoor championships with a jump of 2.20m (7-02.50). The height equals his season-best performance done at the Purdue Invitational on March 26-27. With his All-America effort, Guice becomes the first male track & field athlete in program history to become an All-American three times in outdoor.
For his career, Guice earned All-America honors seven times (three outdoor, four indoor), becoming the most decorated athlete in the history of Purdue men's track & field and the second-most decorated athlete in the combined history of the men's and women's programs behind only Corissa Yasen, who earned 12 All-America honors in her career (eight outdoor, four indoor). The All-America honor earned by Guice is the 37th in the history of Purdue men's outdoor track & field, a program that began competing in 1888.
