WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -

The Purdue men's golf team dropped to fifth place after two rounds of the NCAA Men's Golf Central Regional Championships on Friday.

The Boilermakers were played in the afternoon and fired a 302, seven strokes more than their first-round total. The top 10 teams advance to the NCAA Championships. The 2004 NCAA Men's Golf National Championships are in Hot Springs, Va., from June 1 to 4.

Purdue had to overcome windy and more difficult conditions than it faced on Thursday.

"The back nine really hurt us," said head coach Devon Brouse. "We were in a position to be able to coast on Saturday, and now we have come out and fight our tails off. The wind picked up today a bit and the conditions were a bit more difficult than the first round."

Purdue was led by senior Shiv Kapur, who fired a 76 on Friday. He totaled 149 over the first two rounds and is tied for 27th overall.

Freshman Peter Richardson and junior Dustin Cone both totaled 151. Richardson shot a 79 on Friday and Cone carded a 77. The duo is tied for 34th.

Senior Luke Epp shot a 76 and is tied for 42th. It was Epp's second-straight 76. Freshman Pariya Junhasavasdikul is tied for 51st after a second-round 73. He trimmed seven strokes off his first-round score.

The final round is on Saturday. Purdue tees off at 7:57 a.m. Admission is free to the public and the second round begins at 7:12 a.m. on Saturday. The Kampen Course is playing at 7,259 yards and a par 72.
