The Purdue women's golf team is tied for seventh place after the first round of the NCAA Women's Golf Central Regional Championships.
The Boilermakers fired a 305 on Thursday and trail Vanderbilt and New Mexico by only seven strokes for the tournament lead.
Purdue was led by a pair of freshmen. Myrte Eikenaar and Caroline Haase both fired a pair of two-over 73s. Eikenaar was one-under par on the back nine and Haase played the back nine holes at even par. The duo is tied for fifth overall.
Senior Beth Hermes carded an 80 on the day. She is tied for 60th. Sophomore Onnarin Sattayabanphot was seven over in her first round. She totaled a 79 and is tied for 53rd overall.
Freshman Maria Stinson recorded an 81 and is tied for 70th place.
The event is being hosted by Illinois State on the ISU Golf Course in Normal, Ill. The tournament features 18 holes on each of the next two days.
The top eight teams from the central regional advance to the NCAA championships. The NCAA Women's Golf National Championships are from May 18 to 21 in Auburn, Ala.
Purdue is ranked No. 40 in the current golfweek.com poll. This is the seventh-straight season, the Boilermakers are playing in the postseason. Purdue is one of 12 schools to play in the national championship tournament in the last four-straight seasons.
