Iowa City, Iowa-The Purdue men's tennis team came out with a much needed win in Iowa City at the Klotz Tennis Courts.. Starting the Big Ten season with a bang, the Boilermakers won 6-1 over the Hawkeyes. The win is Purdue's first in the month of March and are now 6-6 (1-0 Big Ten) in the spring season.
The singles matches were played first due to threatening weather. The first Boilermaker point came from Eric Hodgman at No. 6, with a win over Scott Elwell, 6-0, 6-2. Colin Foster won a tough battle and rallied back at the No. 5 spot to top Matis Jasicek, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6. Sounak Chatterjee, now 1-1 at No. 3, was victorious over Walter Valarezo, 6-3, 6-4. The third victory came from David Robinson at No. 4. Robinson defeated Jonny Hoak, 7-5, 6-1. The Hawkeyes point came at No. 2 from Sebastian Delgado over Troy Havens in singles play. Paul Rose picked up a victory over Chaitu Malempati at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-1. Rose is now 8-3 in the spring season.
"Hodgman and Rose continue to play very confident tennis. Paul's leadership up at the top of the line up is helping others like Hodgman and the younger guys understand that we need to put a total team effort out there. We are a stonger team today," head coach Tim Madden said.
The Boilermakers took the double point, winning all three matches. The energy carried over and the weather allowed doubles play. Troy Haven and David Robinson are now 4-2 in the spring season after defeating Malempati and Delgado 8-5.
"Warner and Rose played with a lot of confidence in each other, said Madden. It is nice to see when teamwork comes together. We were dominant in the doubles. I am very pleased with the team confidence in the doubles."
Purdue continues Big Ten action against Minnesota on Sunday, March 28 at 11 a.m. in Minneapolis.
"We are an improved team from the nonconference season, Madden said. "This is a good way to start off the conference opener. Tomorrow will be a tougher test."
