NEW YORK, N.Y. - Kenneth Baxter, Jocelyn Lindsay and Nedzad Mulabegovic all won their respective events Saturday at the Armory Collegiate Invitational; however, their efforts could not prevent the Louisiana State Tigers from winning the men's and women's team titles.
The nationally ranked LSU programs collected 103 points from the men and 138.5 from the women. The eighth-ranked Purdue men finished fourth with 69 points, while the women claimed sixth place with 43 points.
Competing in front of a hometown crowd, Baxter won the 60-meter dash and recorded an NCAA provisional time of 21.13 in the 200. His winning 60 time was clocked at 6.76 seconds, just nipping Texas' Brendan Christian by .01 seconds.
Baxter placed fourth in the 200, just a few ticks behind winner Rodney Martin of South Carolina, who tied a meet record with his time of 20.84.
Winning again for Purdue was Mulabegovic, who recorded an NCAA provisional launch of 63-feet, 7 3/4 inches. Mulabegovic, who recorded the meet record of 64-1 in 2002, beat runner-up Rhuben Williams of Cal by almost three feet. Friday's weight throw champion Scott Hecht placed sixth with an effort of 58-1/4. Mulabegovic has four wins in the shot put this season.
The women's lone victor Saturday was Jocelyn Lindsay, who reached a height of 12-7 1/2 in the pole vault; her leap tied a season best from last week. Teammate Megan Darraugh placed fourth with a season-best leap of 12-3 1/2.
Scoring points for Purdue on the track were Kara Lahey, placing a respectable sixth in the 3,000-meter run (9:43.82), and Kern Woods, who recorded a seventh-place showing in the 60-meter hurdles (8.30).
In the field, freshman John Porter scored an eighth-place point in the pole vault, reaching a height of 15-3, while Tiffany Colvin placed seventh in the high jump, topping out at 5-7.
Next week, the Purdue men will compete at Indiana for an invitational to be held Friday, Feb. 20. The women will play host to the Boilermaker Invitational next Saturday at 10 a.m. The Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships take place Feb. 28 to 29.
