The score was closer than recent duals but the result was the same as the Purdue wrestling team extended its winning streak to 10 with a 19-16 victory over Wyoming in the opening round of the 24th-Annual Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va.

Now 10-0 on the season, the Boilermakers have equalled their best start to a season in program history. The 1986-87 Purdue squad, anchored by current assistant coach Scott Hinkel, was the first Boilermaker team to open a campaign with 10 straight wins.

Once again for the Boilermakers, it was the upper weight divisions that provided the points for Purdue as 16 of the 19 points registered came from the 174, 184, 197 and 285-pound classes.

After three wins by Wyoming to open the dual, senior Dan Jankowski (Evansville, Ind.) grabbed a 4-1 decision against Patrick Shuler to put Purdue on the scoreboard, trailing 9-3. Jankowski, ranked No.28 at 149 pounds, used two third-period takedowns to gain the win in a match that entered the final stanza with a scoreless tie.

Two more Cowboy wins advanced the score to 16-3 in favor of Wyoming, setting up the Boilermaker comeback with the final four matches.

At 174, third-ranked senior Ryan Lange (Northfield, Ohio) took it upon himself to get Purdue back into the dual with a pin at the 2:52 mark of the opening period. Lange was taken down at the start of period one by Josh Prevost but responded with two takedowns of his own. On the second takedown, Lange put Prevost directly to his back and got the stick to pull Purdue to within seven team points at 16-9.

Sophomore Ben Wissel (Richmond, Ind.), ranked as high as No.9, won a 4-1 decision at 184 pounds over Sam Wendland, making the team score 16-12 in favor of the Cowboys. Wissel recorded a first-period takedown and never relinquished the lead, later scoring on an escape and with a riding time point.

A 14-6 major decision at 197 pounds by freshman Nathan Moore (Indianapolis, Ind.) over Malcolm Havens tied the team score at 16-16. Moore blew through the Cowboy grappler with five takedowns and a three-point nearfall for the win.

In a winner-take-all situation, senior heavyweight Israel Blevins (Sullivan, Ind.) posted an 8-6 decision over Dusty Hoffschneider to cap off the comeback victory for the Boilermakers. After opening to a 4-2 advantage after one period, Blevins, the No.11 heavyweight in the nation, scored the winning takedown in the final minute.

With the 19-16 win, Purdue advances to the second round of the championship bracket. The Boilermakers will take on Big Ten foe Wisconsin at 1 P.M. on Friday afternoon at the Hampton Coliseum. Wisconsin is 10-1 on the season and advanced in the Virginia Duals by defeating Lock Haven, 28-15.
