The Purdue women's cross country team came up short on the team scoring side of the Great American Legends in West Lafayette, finishing just seven points behind Eastern Kentucky for the team title. The Boilermakers had two of the top three individual runners in the 5K event.
In the men's 8K race, the Boilermakers finished fifth out of nine teams. Navy was the team champion, while Robert Wade of Loyola (Ill.) won the individual title with a time of 25:28.3, out-kicking Navy's Joshua Sink by one second.
The women's individual champion was Eastern Kentucky's Wendee Embry, who ran an 18:39.5.
Purdue junior Amber Ferner was the top-finishing Boilermaker in the women's race, finishing second for the second time this season. Her 5K time of 18:45.5was her fourth-best time of her career at that distance.
Sophomore Lindsay Zinn picked up her second third-place showing of the season with a time of 18:49.4. The race was Zinn's second since earning Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors in 2001, having sat out the 2002 season with a stress fracture in her foot.
Other scoring runners for the Boilermaker women were sophomore Corrie Whisner with a sixth-place 19:02.9, junior Christan Bahler with a 12th-place 19:17.4, and freshman Rachel Kroll, who finished 17th with a time of 19:26.9.
The 19:02.9 run by Whisner was her second-fastest career time in the 5K, trailing only a clocking of 18:45.0 run last season at the Notre Dame Invitational.
For the Purdue men, senior Kyle Orender returned to the top spot for Boilermaker finishers with a third-place showing. Orender circled the 8K course with a time of 25:37.8. Orender was the top Purdue runner in eight consecutive races in which he competed, having that streak snapped in the opening race of this season.
Junior David Rae, the runner who snapped Orender's streak at the Purdue Open, was the second-place Boilermaker, finishing with a time of 26:42.7 for a 31st-place showing.
Other Boilermaker scorers were junior Nick Bruckbauer (37th, 26:59.3), junior Jason Rahm (48th, 27:21.8) and senior Jason Carlson (51st, 27:28.5). The race was Rahm's first as a member of the varsity team at Purdue, having walk-on after the summer.
The Purdue cross country teams return to action on Friday, Sept. 19, when the Boilermakers travel to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Indiana Intercollegiates.
