BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Hoosier softball team returned the senior day favor with a 3-0 win over Purdue to split the series and end the regular season of the six Boilermaker seniors.
The Hoosiers scored first with a single run in the fourth. Senior Stormy Hanson was hit by a pitch and then stole second, putting her in scoring position for Abby Stark. Stark hit a sharp single stopped by a diving Andrea Hillsey, but she could not make a play at first, allowing Hanson to advance to third. Hillsey recovered to make the throw to the plate, but Hanson slid under the tag of Jesse Jones.
IU added to its lead in the sixth with a two-run home run by Lauren Hines. The shot to center field scored Valerie White from second. White singled up the middle to lead off the inning and advanced on a ground ball by Stark.
The Boilermakers had several chances in the game, but left 11 runners aboard. Purdue had at least one runner on base in five of the seven innings, including bases loaded opportunities in both the fifth and seventh innings. Freshman Tricia Lilley went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a single from the lead-off spot, while freshman Lauren Devich supplied the team a vital pinch hit single in the seventh.
Senior Angi Roembke ensured her impact on Purdue will live on, moving into fifth on the all-time sacrifice hit list with a pair of sacrifice bunts in the contest. Sophomore Andrea Hillsey was walked three times by the Hoosier pitchers, matching a school record tied by Jones in Saturday's contest.
The Boilermakers end the regular season with a 34-27 record, having achieved the fifth consecutive 30-win season at Purdue.
