INDIANAPOLIS - The Boilermaker softball team pulled off the sweep of the IUPUI Jaguars with a 2-0 win in Game 2 of the doubleheader.
Purdue struck first again in the nightcap with a single run in the second inning. Devan Craig walked senior Jesse Jones aboard to lead things off, then Andrea Roush reached when on a fielder's choice when the Jaguars went for the lead runner. Roush stole second and advanced to third on a Laura Martin single to left. Pinch runner Katie Absher swiped second to put two runners in scoring position for sophomore Shelli Messer. Messer tallied a sacrifice fly to left field to pick up the RBI when Roush scored. Absher tried to boost the lead to two, but couldn't beat the relay throw from the shortstop after rounding third.
The Boilermakers put another run on the board in the sixth. Senior Angi Roembke reached when the second baseman muffed a throw while covering first. Andrea Hillsey singled through the right side to move the runner. Jones then singled into the left field gap to bring Roembke home from second. Craig walked Roush to load the bases for Martin, who reached on a fielder's choice as IUPUI tabbed the force out at home. A ground out to the third baseman got the Jaguars out the jam.
Freshman Diana LaRiva picked up a one-hitter, allowing just a double in the second inning, but faced the minimum number of batters, 21, after Crist was picked off after the two-bagger. LaRiva, who struck out nine in the contest, moves to 12-10 on the season, while Craig falls to 7-11.
The Boilermakers scored two runs on hits by four different batters and capitalized on three Jaguar errors.
Purdue will be back in action at 6 p.m. Friday when they take on No. 16 Michigan in Ann Arbor. The game is the first of two against the Wolverines.
