WALNUT, Calif. - Six members of the Purdue track and field team participated in the first day of the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays held in Walnut, Calif., on Thursday.

Sophomore distance runner Kyle Orender placed third in the men's 5,000-meter run. His time of 14:27.90 was merely 1.14 seconds out of second. Texas-El Paso's Dirk de Heer won the event with a time of 14:22.24.

In the women's pole vault competition, Senior Simona Kovacic captured third place with a mark of 12-00.00. Senior Amy Spellmeyer finished 13th in the 18-member field. Her mark was 11-05.00. Nevada's Dana Huesby and Wisconsin's Tara Clack captured first place with a height of 12-06.00.

Sophomore Amber Ferner placed sixth in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. She ran the event in 10:53.31. Junior Kara Lahey came in 15th in event with a time of 11:05.20. Wisconsin took the top two spots in the race.

Junior Shanna Carter wrapped up the second day of competition in the heptathlon event of the Mt. SAC Relays, held in Azusa Pacific Competition. Carter placed 17th in the event with 4,424 points. Missouri claimed the top two spots of the event.
