Final Stats

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The No. 24 Iowa softball team eeked out a pair of runs in the first inning, the only runs in a 2-0 Hawkeye win over Purdue Friday night.

Katie Boney tabbed a one-out bunt single in the first inning to give Iowa its first baserunner. She then advanced to third on a Stacy May single into right field. Christine Schmaltz hit into a fielder's choice and Boney slid around the tag at home to put the Hawkeyes on the board. With two outs and runners at first and second, Jessica Bashor hit a grounder to the shortstop, but Boney cut in front of the play en route to third and the ball rolled off the tip of the fielder's glove allowing the second run to score.

Senior Angi Roembke spoiled a perfect game with a single past pitcher Lisa Birocci, but the Boilermakers couldn't convert as a strikeout and fly out to left field wrapped up the game.

Iowa scored two runs on six hits and two Boilermaker errors, while holding Purdue to just the one hit by Roembke.

Birocci struck out eight Purdue batters and her defense took care of the rest, including a throw from Kristin Johnson to get an out on what could a base hit up the middle by freshman Tricia Lilley. The Boilermakers kept the run total to two forcing the Hawkeyes to strand seven runners.

The Boilermakers and Hawkeyes will finish the two-game series with a noon Saturday game at Pearl Field.
