WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boilermaker softball team braved 15 mph winds and a 21 degree wind chill to pick up their second Big Ten win of the season and snap a three-game draught.
Purdue jumped out to an early 2-0 start after freshman Tricia Lilley was pegged by Angela Kirschberg, extending her school record hit by pitch count to nine on the season. Lilley stole second, before making the trip home on Heidi Foster double to the center field warning track. Foster rounded the bases on a Jesse Jones single that dropped into shallow right field.
Those two runs, combined with five Leighann Burke strikeouts, was all the Boilermakers would need to move to 2-1 in the Big Ten and snap a two-game Badger streak in the series history.
Sophomore Andrea Hillsey went 2-for-3 in the game, continuing to boost her league leading batting average.
The teams will continue the meeting with the second game of the doubleheader.
