PALMER, P.R. - The Purdue men's golf team is in 15th place after the second round of the 2003 Puerto Rico Classic. The event is being held at the par-72, 6,954-yard Westin Rio Mar Country Club in Palmer, Puerto Rico.
The Boilermakers fired a second-round 299, 17 strokes lower than their first-round score of 316. They have a two-day total of 615. N.C. State leads the event with a 574. Minnesota is in second place with a 577.
Purdue was led by senior Chris Mayson and junior Shiv Kapur. The pair is tied for 44th place overall. Mayson fired a second-round 76 and Kapur carded a 74 on Monday.
Senior Peter Karmis is tied for 51st after a second-round 72, a team low on the day. Sophomore Dustin Cone is tied for 72nd with two-day total of 158. He fired a 77 on Monday.
Freshman Roberto Krutzfeldt shot an 80 on Monday and is tied for 80th overall.
The 18-team tournament features eight of the top 15 teams in Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. No. 1 Clemson, No. 5 Florida, No 8 and 2002 National Champion Minnesota, No. 9 Duke, No. 11 Texas, No. 12 Illinois, No. 13 Georgia and No.14 Northwestern headline the field.
Colorado, East Tennessee State, Georgia Tech, Kent State, Michigan, N.C. State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, host-school Purdue and Virginia round out the field.
Final-round action is slated to begin at 7 a.m. EST on Tuesday.
