Men's Golf Tied For 14th Place At Puerto Rico Classic

PALMER, P.R. - The Purdue men's golf team is tied for 14th after the first round of the 2003 Puerto Rico Classic. The event is being held at the par-72, 6,954-yard Westin Rio Mar Country Club in Palmer, Puerto Rico.

The Boilermakers fired a first-round 316 and are tied with Oklahoma and Illinois. N.C. State leads the event after an opening-round 288.

Purdue was led by senior Chris Mayson, who carded a 76 and is tied for 35th. Junior Shiv Kapur is tied 51st after a 78.

Senior Peter Karmis and sophomore Dustin Cone each carded a first-round 81 and are tied for 72nd place. Freshman Roberto Krutzfeldt fired an 82 and is tied for 77th.

The 18-team tournament features eight of the top 15 teams in Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. No. 1 Clemson, No. 5 Florida, No 8 and 2002 National Champion Minnesota, No. 9 Duke, No. 11 Texas, No. 12 Illinois, No. 13 Georgia and No.14 Northwestern headline the field.

Colorado, East Tennessee State, Georgia Tech, Kent State, Michigan, N.C. State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, host-school Purdue and Virginia round out the field.

Second-round action is slated to begin at 7 a.m. EST on Sunday. The tournament will conclude on Monday.
