May 30, 2002

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Purdue men's golf team is tied for 11th place after the second round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships in Columbus, Ohio.

The Boilermakers, who took the course at 7:15 a.m. Thursday morning to conclude the first round, begin second-round play around 8:45 a.m. EST. Purdue fired a second-round 287 and have a two-day total of 571. Clemson and Georgia Tech are tied for the lead after two rounds at five-under par (563).

"We really feel pretty good about our position," said coach Devon Brouse. "We are trying not to look at our standing, but try to focus on how we have played. We feel we played very steady and very solid."

Big Ten Player of the Year and All-America candidate Lee Williamson led the Boilermakers in the second round with a one-under 70. He birdied four of his final seven holes and is tied for 23rd with a two-day total of 141.

"We didn't really make a move today but we played solid," said Williamson. "Tomorrow we are looking to make our run and get out of the pack and into contention. I had my chances to score better today and hopefully tomorrow I'll take advantage of them."

Junior Chris Mayson, who placed second at the NCAA Central Regional, fired a second-round 73 and is three-over par over the first two rounds. He is tied for 53rd with a 144. Sophomore Shiv Kapur kept paced with Mayson and fired a second-round 73 and has a two-day total of 144. He is tied for 53rd place overall.

Junior Peter Karmis improved by three strokes from his first-round score and fired an even-par 71 in the second round and is tied for 75th with a two-day total of 145.

Freshman Dustin Cone is tied for 119th after a second-round 77. He has a two-day total of 148.

"We are hoping we have a good round in us tomorrow," said Brouse. "Our guys are confident and hopefully that will translate into some low rounds. These two days have been a lot of fun but we have something to prove in an event with the best teams in the nation."

This is the second-straight season that the Boilermakers have advanced to the NCAA Championships. The Boilermakers finished 28th at the 2001 NCAA Championships.

The Boilermakers will begin the third round at 8:03 a.m. EST. Live scoring is provided by www.golfstat.com. A link is provided on the main page of www.purduesports.com.

The event is being held at the 7,236-yard, par-71 Scarlet Course. The event will conclude on Saturday.
