WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After one round of play at the NCAA Central Regional hosted by Arkansas-Little Rock, the Purdue men's golf team is in fifth place with an 18-hole score of 290. The Boilermakers finished the first round at two-over on Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock, Ark.
Oklahoma State is in the lead with a 287 (-1). Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas Christian are tied for second at 289 (+1). Southern Methodist and Toledo trail Purdue by one stroke. Alabama and Baylor are five strokes off the lead. Illinois is six strokes back.
Purdue coach Devon Brouse was happy with the Boilermakers' position after the first round.
"We did fine, but we know we can do better," Brouse said. "We're glad to be in the top 10 right now. I think if we get some things ironed out we'll be in even better shape."
Senior Lee Williamson led the 21st-ranked Boilermakers with a two-under-par 70, finishing the first day in a tie for fifth.
Juniors Peter Karmis and Chris Mayson both carded 73s and are tied for 33rd. Karmis closed in fine fashion, recording an eagle on the 18th hole, a par five. Mayson birdied a team-best five holes.
"Peter and Chris played very well and came through with some tough shots and good scores," Brouse said. "Hopefully they will stay on track and continue to improve over the next two rounds."
Freshman Dustin Cone and sophomore Shiv Kapur both shot 74s. They are tied for 43rd.
Texas Christian's Bret Guetz and Oklahoma's John Kidwell are tied for first place with 68s. Guetz birdied five holes and eagled one. Kidwell birdied six holes.
Purdue and the rest of the 27-team field will continue action on Friday, May 17 before wrapping up on Saturday, May 18. The top 10 finishers in each of the three NCAA Regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships hosted by Ohio State from May 29 to June 1.
