IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Purdue men's golf team is in first place after the first two rounds of the 2002 Big Ten Men's Golf Championships.
The event is being played at the par-72, 7,002-yard Finkbine Golf Course and hosted by the University of Iowa. The Boilermakers fired a first-round 279 and led the field by 10 strokes. In the second round, the Old Gold and Black carded a 289 and finished the first day with a 568. Minnesota and Northwestern are tied for second at 572.
"We played great this morning," said associate coach Andrew Sapp. "We didn't play all that well this afternoon in the second round but we are in a good position."
Freshman Dustin Cone fired a three-under 69 in the morning and an even-par 72 in the afternoon to finish tied for second with a 141. Junior Chris Mayson is tied for second after carding a 141 after a 68 and 73.
Senior All-America candidate Lee Williamson provided the highlight of the day by holing out his second shot on the par-five 15th. Williamson hit an eight iron for the double eagle. He fired a 69 in the morning and a 73 in the afternoon and is tied for seventh with a 142.
"Lee definitely stole the show with that shot on hole 15," said Sapp. "Dustin and Chris each had great days as well and we need them to play like that through the weekend."
Sophomore Shiv Kapur recorded a 146 and is tied for 23rd. Junior Peter Karmis is tied for 38th after carding a 149 in the first two rounds.
The Boilermakers have three individuals in the top seven and are the only school with more than one person in seventh place or better.
The No. 23 Boilermakers are one of two Big Ten schools ranked in the top 25 of the Golfweek/Sagarin golf rankings. Minnesota is ranked 24th.
"We need to come out tomorrow and play well," said Sapp. "If we do that then we can we will be in good shape for Sunday."
The third round begins at 8 a.m. CDT and the final round will begin on Sunday at 8 a.m. CDT.
