Women's Tennis Beats Michigan State 4-3

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team concluded its regular season by defeating Michigan State 4-3 in East Lansing today.

Purdue head coach Mat Iandolo was pleased with the team's overall effort.

"We won doubles and three singles matches convincingly," Iandolo said. "The team played well from top to bottom."

The Boilermakers won all three doubles matches for the point.

Heading into singles with a 1-0 lead, Purdue won three of the six matches. Sophomore Gretchen Haynor upended Asa Liden 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 spot.

Two rookies from the bottom of the lineup scored the team's other two points. Lara Burgarello defeated Mandy Caldemeyer and Amy Walgenbach defeated Kate Thomas 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots respectively.

Freshman Shawna Zuccarini was out due to a wrist injury. She plays at the No. 5 singles spot and is 5-4 in the Big Ten (18-18 overall). Senior Lynsey Fick competed in her absence at the No. 6 spot.

Purdue ended the weekend with a 9-11 overall and a 5-5 conference records. Heading into the Big Ten Championships, the Boilermakers are currently tied with Indiana, Iowa, and Michigan. The tournament will begin on Thursday, April 25 in Bloomington, Ind.
