WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team defeated Penn State 5-2 in West Lafayette on Sunday, April 14.
Head coach Mat Iandolo was pleased with the team's performance.
"We were supposed to win and we had to have it," Iandolo said. "The team did a good job of playing to win today.
Iandolo was most impressed with sophomore Gretchen Haynor, who picked up a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Megan Marton at No. 2 singles.
"Gretchen stepped up and proved herself as one of the best No. 2 singles player in the conference," Iandolo said
Also in singles, junior Melissa Iqbal upended Rebecca Ho 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Melissa Woods defeated Leigh Ann Merryman 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot. And freshman Lara Burgarello upended Maaria Husain 7-6, 6-3 at the No. 4 position.
In doubles, the 54th-ranked duo of Haynor and junior Missy Wright defeated Ho and Merryman 9-7 at No. 1. At the No. 3 spot, Iqbal and Burgarello defeated Husain and Spence 8-4.
Purdue ends the weekend with an 8-10 overall record and 4-4 Big Ten mark. The Boilermakers will return to action on April 20 when they play at Michigan.
