Boilermakers Claim Johnny Owens Invitational Title

March 30, 2002

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Purdue walked away with the team championship at the Johnny Owens Invitational behind Shiv Kapur and Lee Williamson's top five finishes. The Boilermakers shot a tournament-low 278 as a team in the final round to pass up opening-day leader and tournament host Kentucky to take the title.

The Old Gold and Black fired a final-round 278 and finished a two-day total of 857. The Wildcats shot 283 during the last day of action, and placed second six strokes behind Purdue.

Sophomore Shiv Kapur finished third overall after shooting 212 (-1) on the weekend. Kapur rise from a 15-man tie for 32nd on the first day of action to third was fueled by his four below par total of 67 in the second round of action.

Senior Lee Williamson finished tied for fourth with a 213 (E). Junior Chris Mayson tied for 13th with a 216. Classmate Peter Karmis shot 218 and finished tied for 21st. Rookie Dustin Cone tied for 55th overall after a three-day total of 226.

The Boilermakers return to action on April 12-14 in Columbus, Ohio at the Kepler-Cleveland Intercollegiate Invite.
