Women's Tennis Upsets No. 22 Notre Dame

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue women's tennis upset No. 22 Notre Dame 5-2, today.

Purdue head coach Mat Iandolo was excited for today's win in Lafayette.

"This is one of the best wins in the history of the program," Iandolo said. "It sets us up for post season play. Iqbal's and Haynor's victories were nothing short of amazing."

The dual match consisted of Purdue upsetting the Irish four times.

In doubles, junior Missy Wright and sophomore Gretchen Haynor upset No. 30 Lindsey Green and Becky Varnum 8-5 at the No. 1 spot. The Boilermakers also won the No. 2 spot in doubles.

In singles, junior Melissa Iqbal upended No. 75 Varnum and Haynor defeated No. 112 Nina Vaughan all in straight sets.

The final upset came when freshman Shawna Zuccarini clinched the match after defeating Katie Cunha 7-6, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot. Purdue then went on to win the No. 6 spot.

Purdue will end the week with a 5-7 overall record. The Boilermakers will travel to Bloomington to face No. 35 Indiana on Saturday, March 30.
