BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. - The Purdue women's golf team is tied for fifth after the first round of the Lady Gamecock Classic hosted by the University of South Carolina.
The Boilermakers fired a first-round 296 and are tied with Vanderbilt at eight-over par. Texas leads the event after carding an even-par 288.
Seniors Andrea Makauskas and Caroline Laurens carded a pair of 73's and are tied for 12th. Junior Kari Damron and sophomore Beth Hermes fired a pair of three-over 75's and are tied for 26th. Junior Heather Zielinski is tied for 65th after a 10-over par 82.
The Lady Gamecock Classic is the third event of the spring season for the Boilermakers. Purdue finished 15th in the TRW Regional Challenge and tied for second in the Central District Invitational in February.
The event is being held at the 5,996-yard, par-72 University Club. The second round begins on Saturday at 8 a.m. EST and will conclude on Sunday.
