WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue men's golf team is in fifth place in the Puerto Rico Classic after one round of play.
The Boilermakers are led by Chris Mayson, currently tied for 19th place with an even-par 72. Purdue placed four golfers in the top 31 with Dustin Cone tied for 25th after firing a 73. Shiv Kapur and Lee Williamson are both tied for 31st after shooting a pair of 74's. Peter Karmis is tied for 69th after carding an 80.
"A solid start for us today," said head coach Devon Brouse. "We got some strong play from Chris Mayson who is playing with the same confidence he did in Florida. We made a lot of birdies today which is a good sign for tomorrow."
The 15-team event features Clemson, Colorado, Duke, East Tennessee State, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kent State, Minnesota, N.C. State, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Purdue, Texas and Virginia.
The second round begins on Monday at 8 a.m. EST. The event's final round will begin on Tuesday.
