WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team defeated Western Michigan 6-1, today at the Lafayette Sports Center.
The Boilermakers now own a 2-4 overall record and a 2-2 home record heading into the Big Ten season opener at Iowa on March 3.
Purdue head coach Mat Iandolo was pleased with the team's performance.
"Western Michigan always plays tough," Iandolo said. "It's great to get a decisive win over a team of that caliber. I am very pleased with Iqbal's performance in singles because she has a 4-2 record. She is playing big-time tennis early in the season. I am looking forward to opening the Big Ten season against Iowa."
The Boilermakers began the dual match by winning the doubles point. Junior Missy Wright and sophomore Gretchen Haynor defeated Frederika Girsang and Brookley Chews 8-6 at the No. 1 spot. Iqbal and freshman Lara Burgarello defeated Nikki Douglas and Valeria Stoilova 8-3 at the No. 3 position.
Singles was highlighted by freshman Shawna Zuccarini upending Valeria Stoilova 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot. Purdue also won singles at the No. 1, 2, 5, and 6 spots in all straight sets.
