SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Purdue softball team took Kentucky into extra innings Friday before falling to the Wildcats 1-0 in the UT-San Antonio Fastpitch Classic.
The game was scoreless going into the top of the ninth, when Kentucky first baseman Andy Eilertson reached third base for the Wildcats. On a fielder's choice, third baseman Rachel Friberg reached base as Purdue second baseman Andrea Hillsey threw home to cut down Eilertson and preserve the deadlock. Friberg then stole second and scored on pitcher Megan Cooper's single to center field.
In the bottom of the ninth, Hillsey was placed on second, and Katie Absher was inserted as a pinch runner. After catcher Jesse Jones was called out on strikes, third baseman Shelli Messer came to the plate. Messer flied out to second and Absher was doubled off for the final out.
The Old Gold and Black fell to 3-3 on the season, heading into an afternoon game with Wichita State. The tournament continues Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, Purdue faces 27th-ranked Texas at 3 p.m. and 17th-ranked Southwest Texas State at 5:30 p.m. Purdue will finish out the weekend on Sunday against Bethune-Cookman, whom the Boilermakers defeated last weekend, at 8:30 a.m., and host UT-San Antonio at 10:30 a.m.
