Purdue Evens Classic Record With 7-4 Win Over Wichita State

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Led by a grand slam by shortstop Katie Crabtree, the Purdue softball team evened its record in the UT-San Antonio Fastpitch Classic with a 7-4 win over Wichita State.

The Boilermakers led 2-0 as they came to bat in the top of the fourth. Second baseman Andrea Hillsey reached first after being hit by a pitch and advanced to second on left fielder Angi Roembke's single. Right fielder Angela Knight moved the runners with a base on balls. Crabtree then cleared the bases, hitting a 2-2 pitch over the wall. Purdue added one more run in the fourth, when catcher Sara Hall singled to left, driving in first baseman Heidi Foster.

Wichita State (0-1) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs.

Pitcher Megan Dooley (2-0) picked up the win with 4.0 innings of work. She gave up five hits and three run, two of them earned. In relief, Leighann Burke picked up the save as she struck out four of the 10 batters she faced.

The Old Gold and Black is 4-3 on the season, heading into two games on Saturday and two on Sunday.

Earlier Friday, Purdue dropped an extra-innings game to Kentucky, 1-0.

On Saturday, Purdue faces 27th-ranked Texas at 3 p.m. and 17th-ranked Southwest Texas State at 5:30 p.m. Purdue will finish out the weekend on Sunday against Bethune-Cookman, whom it defeated last weekend, at 8:30 a.m., and host UT-San Antonio at 10:30 a.m.
