WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue men's golf team tied for second place in the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., on Sunday. The Boilermakers carded a three-round total of 847 and were merely one stroke behind first-place Louisiana State, who fired an 846.
Purdue stood in eighth place after the first two rounds, but recorded a 270, the lowest team round of the day, to move up into a tie for second with the University of Alabama-Birmingham and defending national champion Florida.
The Boilermakers' total of 847 is five strokes lower than the lowest three-round total in school history. The previous mark of 852 was set in the Cobra Collegiate in 1999.
The Boilermakers were led by junior Chris Mayson, who carded a 211 and finished in ninth place. Sophomore Shiv Kapur totaled a 212 and tied for 10th place. Senior Lee Williamson fired a final-round 66 and tied for 13th place overall after a three-round total of 213. Freshman Dustin Cone and junior Peter Karmis both tied for 24th place after finishing with a pair of 216's.
Williamson and Karmis each had a pair of final-round 66's, which tie for the sixth-lowest rounds in school history. Mayson's three-round total of 211 ties for the third-lowest three-round total in school history.
"It was great to see us come out and compete with some of the southern schools, who have been playing outside for a while now," said assistant coach Andrew Sapp. "Lee Williamson and Peter Karmis each came back with great final rounds and we got solid performances from everyone all weekend."
Purdue will hit the course next on Feb. 24-26, when they host the Puerto Rico Classic in Puerto Rico.
