WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team competed in two rounds of singles and one round of doubles at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic today.
Head coach Mat Iandolo was pleased with the competition overall.
"We lost a lot of close matches today, but hope to capitalize and finish strong in tomorrow's matches," Iandolo said.
In singles, Senior Lynsey Fick defeated Anna Pavlovic of Marquette 7-5, 6-3, to whom she lost 6-2, 6-0 at the ITA Omni Hotel Regional Championships on Oct. 25. Fick then fell 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 to Katie Granson of Duke in the second round.
Freshman Lara Burgarello lost a marathon match to Mily Kanarrkat of Old Dominion 3-6, 4-6, 6-2. She will continue to compete tomorrow afternoon in the backdraw. Sophomore Gretchen Haynor fell to Jill Buckley of Kentucky 6-4, 6-3. She had a bye for the second round and will proceed to play Friday afternoon. Freshman Amy Walgenbach was defeated 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 by Jana Sedivec of Tulsa. She also will continue to compete tomorrow afternoon in the consolation round.
Freshman Shawna Zuccarini lost a heartbreaker to Courtney Perkins of Portland 6-3, 6-2, but regained her composure to defeat Andi Wildner of Abilene Christian 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Zuccarini advances to competition Friday afternoon.
Junior Missy Wright played two sets against Kit Carson of SMU before retiring due to an ankle injury.
Sophomore Melissa Woods was scheduled to play today in the singles competition but withdrew.
In the doubles competition, the Purdue pair of Woods and Fick defeated Kate Troy of Williams College and Elizabeth Winchester of Wisconsin, 8-2. Burgarello combined with Kit Carson of SMU and upended Abilene Christian's duo of Andi Wildner and Sarah Taweel, 8-4.
Walgenbach and Zuccarini fell 8-2 to the combo of Larissa Chinwah of Western Michigan and Emily Marker of Maryland.
Haynor and Wright had a bye and will compete for the first time Friday morning.
